What if the language you use for inner experience is telling you something important?

We know an extraordinary amount about the physical body. The body you actually experience from the inside is rather less straightforward.

Where this begins

Your inner world behaves remarkably like a body.

People talk about being wounded, drained, suffocated, exposed, crushed, empty, invaded or unable to breathe.

Usually we call these metaphors. But metaphors become interesting when millions of people independently use the same ones.

The Invisible Body explores the possibility that subjective experience has its own organisation: boundaries, injuries, needs, sensations and patterns that behave as though an internal body were involved.

If an experience behaves like a wound, it may be worth learning how that wound behaves before arguing about what to call it.
The working idea

Consciousness may have an anatomy of its own.

Not flesh and bone. Functions, needs, vulnerabilities and ways of becoming injured, depleted or disorganised. You do not need to decide that an invisible anatomical body literally exists. The useful question is whether the model helps you understand experience with greater precision.

AttentionWhat consciousness takes in, what it repeatedly feeds upon and how attention can nourish, overload or starve the wider system.
BoundaryWhat gets through, what is kept out, what feels too exposed and what becomes numb.
DigestionWhat can be processed, what remains undigested and what continues to affect the system long after the event itself.
StructureHow identity, imagination, desire, will and truth can give inner life shape, movement and coherence.

Inside the programme

The programme gives different functions of consciousness a body-language of their own.

The point is not anatomical poetry. It is to make invisible processes easier to recognise, assess and work with.

Why information is not always enough

Once you imagine consciousness as a living system, a different question appears.

What does it require in order to remain healthy?

A physical body has requirements. Remove sleep, nourishment, safety, movement or recovery for long enough and there are consequences. The Invisible Body applies the same style of thinking to consciousness.

What happens when attention is permanently consumed by threat? When perception has no boundary? When experience is never properly digested? When imagination disappears, identity collapses, desire is suppressed or will becomes exhausted?

What this programme is, and isn't

Sometimes the problem is easier to work with once it has somewhere to live.

“I feel wrong” is difficult to act on. “My boundaries feel permanently stripped away” gives you somewhere to begin.

The Invisible Body is a model, and models are useful when they create better questions.

The language makes inner experience more concrete without pretending that metaphor and biology are the same thing.
