Professional practitioner training

Become the practitioner who knows what to do next, and why.

Sanomentology trains you to understand the person before choosing the intervention: to formulate what may actually be happening, select deliberately and know why the work belongs.

Already working with people? Sharpen the judgement behind what you do. Starting from scratch? Level 1 begins with practitioner foundations and teaches the method from the ground up.

Knowing why is not always enough

Understanding the problem intellectually does not always change it.

Some clients can explain their childhood, name the trigger, describe the pattern and tell you exactly why they behave as they do.

And it is still happening.

“I understand where the anxiety comes from.”
“I know I should stop doing it.”
“I have already talked about my childhood.”
“It worked for a while. Then it came back.”
These are not necessarily people who need another explanation. Often the useful work is changing how the experience itself is organised, represented or responded to.
Handwritten note: I know why I do it. I just can't stop.
The technique is not the treatment plan

See. Formulate. Select. Sequence. Review.

Sanomentology is a practitioner methodology for understanding the person before deciding what to do next. A practitioner can know twenty interventions and still have no good reason to choose one over another. Sanomentology changes the order. Understanding comes before intervention. The formulation is a working understanding, not a verdict on the person. If new information changes what you are looking at, the formulation has to move.

See

What is actually here?

Symptom, identity, emotion, context, physiology, relationship, meaning and the practitioner’s own contribution.

Formulate

What may be organising it?

What keeps the pattern in place? What function might it serve? What is missing from the obvious explanation?

Select

What fits this person?

Choose the work because the formulation supports it, not because it is the technique you happen to use most.

Sequence

What happens now, later or not at all?

Good judgement includes knowing when to pause, when less is better and when another professional should be involved.

Review

What changed, and what does that tell you?

Notice what moved, what did not, and whether the formulation, process or sequence needs to change before you do more.

With anxiety, the useful question becomes: why is this person anxious, what is organising it, and what would need to change?

When the Client Does Not Fit the Technique

Training examples are tidy. Real people are not. They arrive with their own explanation, familiar labels, contradictions, half-finished thoughts and signals that do not always fit the technique you were taught to reach for.

This class is about what happens before the technique: how I think about a case, what I pay attention to, and why formulation comes before intervention.

The same label can hide very different cases

Five people can say “I have anxiety.”

They may need five different pieces of work. The word tells you what they are experiencing. It does not automatically tell you why it is happening or what should change.

Memory

The nervous system may still be responding to something that is over in time but not over in experience.

Meaning

The sensation may be frightening because of what the person believes it means.

Uncertainty

The real struggle may be an inability to tolerate not knowing what comes next.

Context

The person may be living in circumstances that would keep almost anybody on alert.

Protection

Vigilance may have become part of staying safe. Remove the symptom without understanding the job and the system may replace it.

Same symptom. Five formulations. Five possible directions.
What should improve in your work?

The decisions you make in the room.

Useful training changes what you notice, the questions you ask and the reasons behind whatever you choose to do next.

“What technique should I use?”
What am I actually looking at?
“Why didn’t that work?”
What is maintaining this?
“I need another modality.”
I need a clearer formulation.
“This person is resistant.”
What is this response protecting or accomplishing?
“I should be able to fix this.”
Is this mine to work with at all?
“More must be better.”
What is useful here, and what should I leave alone?
You can stop at Level 1

You do not have to buy the whole pathway.

Level 1 is complete practitioner training in its own right. Start there, use the work, and decide later whether you want Levels 2 and 3.

A new career is a real possibility

You can start from scratch.

Level 1 assumes you are learning from the beginning. It starts with the foundations of working responsibly with another person, then builds into the Sanomentology method itself.

That works equally well if you are adding something substantial to an existing profession or beginning a completely different kind of working life.

Level 1 contains the practitioner foundations and Sanomentology training you need to begin.
Professional titles, insurance, licensing and regulatory requirements vary by country and type of practice. Sanomentology gives you the training pathway itself; you remain responsible for meeting any local requirements that apply to the work you choose to offer.
Who is training now?
Doctors. Nurses. Psychologists. Psychotherapists. Hypnotherapists. Coaches. Business leaders. Strategists. Copywriters. Complete beginners.

They are not all aiming for the same kind of work. Some are deepening clinical or therapeutic practice. Others use the thinking in leadership, strategy, communication or creative work. Some are starting a new helping career from the beginning.

Build a new practice Begin with the practitioner foundations, complete Level 1, then decide how far you want to take the pathway.
Deepen an existing practice Add a wider formulation model and more deliberate case direction to therapy, coaching or change work you already do.
Use the thinking in other people-centred work Leadership, strategy, communication, creative work and consulting all benefit from understanding people beyond surface behaviour.
Continue through the full pathway Move from Foundation Practitioner to Advanced Practitioner and, if you want the full method, Master Sanomentologist.
What is actually inside Level 1?

Level 1 is built as a complete practitioner foundation.

It stands on its own as substantial practitioner education: how to work with people, how to formulate, how to communicate beyond surface conversation, how to use the core Sanomentology processes and how to decide what belongs in the room.

What £899 includes

The whole Level 1 practitioner foundation.

That includes the practitioner foundations, a coherent way to formulate, complete process material, a substantial manual, exercises, assessment, certification route and direct support.

The test comes later, when somebody is sitting opposite you and you can see more clearly what you are dealing with, why you are choosing the work and when to leave something alone.
Be ready for the room.Rapport, listening, boundaries, safety, practitioner state and professional judgement come before clever processes.
Make sense of the case.Move beyond the presenting complaint and ask what may be organising, maintaining or protecting the problem.
Learn the processes in full. The Sanomentology structures and trainee wording are preserved. You learn the work as designed, not fragments of it.
Keep the manual beside you.The manual, exercises and structured training remain available while familiarity and confidence develop.
Earn the certification.Certification follows the required learning and assessment. Payment alone does not create competence.
Ask when you are unsure.Direct online support means questions do not have to remain questions when you begin applying the material.

When the work became personal

Lidia found Sanomentology when she needed the work herself.

“Sanomentology was my lifeline.”

She came to the work during a major crisis after losing a job she had been deeply identified with. Her experience was strong enough that she later chose to train in Sanomentology herself.

The crisis After almost seven years in a company she strongly identified with, her role was removed during reorganisation. She described grief, depression and a collapse in confidence.
The problem Shame, guilt, self-doubt and imposter feelings became so strong that even job interviews could end in tears.
Her experience Lidia says that after the first Sanomentology session she felt able to act again, became calmer and stronger internally, and later found a new job within three months.
Then she trained The experience led her to learn Sanomentology herself because she had finally found something that felt deeper than previous therapy, coaching and training.

“The Sanomentology training truly proved to be a game changer in my life. When I started, I was going through a major crisis.”

“I was paralyzed by overwhelming shame, guilt, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome... I needed a fast, effective solution, as traditional therapy seemed too slow. Sanomentology was my lifeline.”

Lidia’s account is her own experience. Individual experiences vary and it is not presented as a guarantee of outcome.
When Level 1 is finished

You should be able to do more than explain the theory.

You should be able to sit with another person, think more clearly about what is happening and have a reason for whatever you choose to do next. The process itself is not the destination. What matters is whether something useful changes in the life the client goes back to.

Structure an initial practitioner conversation without turning it into an interrogation or rushing to a technique.

Formulate beyond the presenting problem and identify plausible maintaining patterns, meanings, identity issues, emotional processes and context.

Use the Level 1 Sanomentology processes as taught with the manual and full session structure available as working support.

Choose rather than grab. Have a reason for selecting a piece of work and a reason for leaving something alone.

Recognise the edge of your competence. Know when to pause, seek guidance or refer rather than pushing on because you feel you should fix everything.

Have a clear next step. Stop at Level 1 with substantial practitioner training, or continue into Levels 2 and 3 if you want deeper complexity and master-level formulation.

No previous practitioner experience is required to begin. Professional titles, insurance, licensing and regulatory requirements vary by location and type of work.

Martin Rothery
Why this exists

I have spent 38 years trying to understand why people do what they do.

I developed Sanomentology first. Nine Realms Institute grew around it later as the wider home for the training, books, programmes and the Nine Realms. Sanomentology developed from a practical frustration: people do not arrive in neat categories, and knowing an intervention is not the same thing as knowing when it belongs in the room.

I am still trying to work people out. I would be suspicious of anybody who was not.

Curiosity is a legitimate therapeutic tool.
Before you decide

Things people usually want to know before they enrol.

What is Sanomentology?
Sanomentology is a practitioner methodology developed by Martin Rothery. It trains practitioners to understand the person and formulate what may be organising a problem before selecting and sequencing the work. It includes specific Sanomentology processes, but it is not built around using one technique for every person or presentation.
Who developed Sanomentology?
Martin Rothery developed Sanomentology before the Nine Realms and before Nine Realms Institute. The Institute came later as the wider home for Sanomentology, the Nine Realms, practitioner training, personal programmes and Martin's broader body of work.
How is Sanomentology training structured?
The current practitioner pathway has three progressive levels: Level 1 Foundation Practitioner, Level 2 Advanced Practitioner and Level 3 Master Sanomentologist. Level 1 can stand alone, while Levels 2 and 3 develop greater complexity, integration, formulation and sequencing. Current pricing and enrolment options are shown on this page.
Can I really start with no experience?
Yes. Level 1 begins with practitioner foundations and does not assume previous therapy, coaching, Sanomentology training.
Is this suitable if I am considering a new career?
Yes. That is one of the reasons Level 1 begins where it does. It gives you the Sanomentology practitioner foundations and method from the ground up. You remain responsible for any local licensing, insurance or regulatory requirements that apply to the work you later choose to offer.
Do I have to abandon the methods I already use?
No. Sanomentology is designed to improve what you notice and how you formulate. Sometimes the best intervention will be something you already know.
Is Sanomentology just another modality?
No. It includes specific Sanomentology processes, but the larger training is about practitioner judgement: how to understand the person, formulate what may be happening, select the work deliberately, review what changed and know when another route is more appropriate.
Will I actually be able to use it?
The training includes the full session structures, exercises, manual, practical applications and assessment rather than leaving you with theory alone.
Can trainees invent new Sanomentology processes?
No. The full process wording and structure are preserved. Advanced practice is about better formulation, selection and sequencing, not inventing new protocols.
Is certification automatic?
No. Certification follows the required learning and assessment. Payment buys access to the training, not an automatic professional claim.
What happens after Level 1?
You can stop there, or continue. Level 2 becomes available once Level 1 has been purchased. Level 3 follows Level 2.
