From the Author of the Strangers Trilogy
What consciousness, cosmology, and the expanding void might be telling us about where we are
The Strangers trilogy asked who is running your life, who is running your world, and what happened between all of us. This book asks the largest question left. What if consciousness is not what the brain produces, but what the universe is?

“You are the universe looking at its own origin. Whether that looking was implicit in the beginning is the question this book is asking.”
— Martin Rothery, The Aware Universe
What this book is
The Question
There is a question sitting at the intersection of the best physics of the last hundred years and the oldest intuitions of every culture that has ever seriously tried to understand the nature of reality. It is not being asked clearly anywhere. Not in the physics journals, which tend to stop at the equations. Not in the philosophy departments, which tend to stop at the arguments. Certainly not in the self-help section, which tends to stop at the affirmations.
The question is this. What if consciousness is not what the brain produces, but what the universe is?
The universe began in a state of undifferentiated unity. It produced a rounding error that became everything. It released light when it became transparent. It has been cooling and organising and complexifying into structures capable of asking questions about themselves ever since. Whether the asking was implicit in the beginning — whether consciousness is something that was there from the start and has been organising itself into increasingly expressive forms — is not a mystical question. It is a physics question. And the physics does not have a clean answer.
This book asks it clearly. Then follows the question wherever it leads.
